Rep. John Barrow Against New Georgia Immigration Law

U.S. Rep. John Barrow blasted a new Georgia immigration law as "hamhanded,'' saying it's harmed farmers in the state.

In an interview with The Associated Press Tuesday, the Democrat also said he would move from Savannah into his new district if federal officials sign off on the new political boundaries state
lawmakers adopted last month. The Republican-led state Legislature redrew Barrow's district so that he no longer lives in it.

Barrow assailed the state's tough new immigration law, which some farmers in the state say is scaring away workers.

Barrow said he supports efforts to curb illegal immigration but they must be accomplished at a national level or Georgia is placed at a competitive disadvantage. A flood of workers from Georgia has neighboring states "laughing all the way to harvest.''
