Nature Attractions of Georgia

Founded in 1733, the state of Georgia consists of 159 counties and is the last of the 13 original English colonies to be established in the United States. There are several popular cities in the State of Georgia, including Atlanta, Augusta and Macon. This state also has a wide array of nature attractions such as the Cochran Mill Nature Center, Fernbank Museum of Natural History and the Oatland Island Wildlife Center of Savannah.
Cochran Mill Nature Center

The Cochran Mill Nature Center is located in Palmetto, Georgia, 20 minutes south of Atlanta. This nature center has hiking trails, a pond and several acres of woodland and wildlife. This center offers environmental education for children and adults to learn about resident birds that were permanently injured and cannot survive in the wild, as well as rescued reptiles. The Cochran Mill Nature Center has picnic grounds available for birthday parties, reunions and other outdoor events. This center has a general admission fee of $3 for adults and $2 for children older than 2 (February, 2010 rates). Center members and children younger than 2 are admitted free.
Fernbank Museum of Natural History

The Fernbank, located in Atlanta, was first inspired by the dream of Emily Harrison, a young girl who loved playing in the forest surrounding her home and thrived on learning about animals and plants around her. Emily's favorite spot in the forest was a creek bank covered with ferns that she called "Fernbank." This name was publicly recognized in the 1880s. Today, this museum offers educational field trips, summer camps and programs to allow children and adults to learn about nature. The Fernbank Museum also has an IMAX theater and several permanent and special exhibitions on dinosaurs, nature and reflections of culture collections. There is an admission fee for groups ranging from $9 to $28 as well as individual museum tickets from $13 to $15. Additional fees are required for admission to the IMAX. Bulk tickets and annual memberships are also available to include admission to multiple exhibits and IMAX.
Oatland Island Wildlife Center of Savannah

Located in Savannah, Georgia, the Oatland Island Wildlife Center is home to more than 50 species of animals and more than 100 acres of exhibits and maritime forest. In 1973, this center was purchased by the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System and has introduced guests to the natural wildlife of Georgia. The center received its official name, "Oatland Island Wildlife Center," in 2007. This center offers exhibits and educational programs on several species of wildlife animals, fowl and farm animals. Admission fees ranging from $3 to $5 are required to visit this wildlife nature center.
