Legalizing Documents
You often need apostilles to authenticate documents if you are going to work abroad. Basically they can give an apostille for any work related document that is an original. Photocopies cannot be given an apostille. You may need to attach an apostille to documents such as Apprenticeship or Indenture certificates, to prove that you have qualified in your chosen profession, for example. Apostilles can also be issued for Criminal Records Checks, and any other document you may have to produce in order to satisfy a country's legal requirements for foreign nationals working in that country. You should check with embassies to find out exactly what documentation is needed, and check with the British government also. All this can be done online, as can filling in an order for an apostille.
Apostilles will also authenticate your educational degrees and diplomas, as long as they were obtained from a fully accredited University, college or distance learning establishment. If, however you paid for a degree or other educational award online, then these cannot be given an apostille.
You often need proof of educational achievements and these have to be compared with the educational standards in the country you are going to work in. For example, a British Master's degree might be the equivalent of an M.Phil in, say, Pakistan. Similarly, if you got a qualification abroad and wanted to go to a British university the qualification would have to be verified and subject to investigation, to see what equivalent it has in the British education system.
Often employers will ask for equivalence of academic qualifications, and an apostille will prove that your degree, diploma, or other educational qualifications are bona fide.
If you want a degree or other certificate to be authenticated with an apostille, you should submit the original document along with any letter from the university (in the cases of post graduate qualifications) stating the nature of your dissertation and/or thesis. If you have lost this letter the registrar at the educational institution from which it was obtained will provide you with another letter so that you have proof positive of having obtained the higher degree. This will expedite the issuing of the apostille in such cases.
